Shasta Gaughen, Environmental Director
and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer
As PED’s director and THPO, Shasta oversees the operation of the entire department. Her job is to make sure that Pala’s environment, both natural and cultural, is protected. She keeps the Executive Committee informed, and she works with legal and environmental partners on issues of importance to Pala, including the fight to stop the Gregory Canyon Landfill. She also ensures a continuous source of funding for the department through grants and partnerships.
Irene Frantz, Administrative Assistant
Irene provides administrative support to the Pala Environmental Director and department staff. She is responsible for accounting and record keeping for the Environmental Department; Transfer Station; USEPA and THPO Grant programs, and for keeping the office running smoothly. Irene is the person to call if you have questions for the Environmental Department. She can direct you to the right person.
Heidi Brow, Water Resource Specialist
Heidi is the water resource specialist for the Pala Environmental Department. Heidi’s job is to protect our surface and groundwater resources so that future Pala generations will be able to use and enjoy them long after we are gone. You can learn more about our water program here.
Kurt Broz, Natural Resources Specialist
Kurt’s duties include surveying and reporting on endangered species, mapping wildlife movement corridors, mapping vegetation, educational outreach, and general wildlife studies. He’s the person to call if you have questions or concerns about Pala’s animals and plants. Kurt’s position is currently funded by a grant from the USFWS for the creation of a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). Learn more about Kurt’s work with wildlife here.
Antonio Lovato, Environmental Technician
Antonio Lovato is our environmental technician. He helps fill in the gaps by assisting with all of our programs, but his specialty is hazardous waste management. Antonio makes sure that we are properly storing and disposing of hazardous materials at the Pala Transfer Station and oversees our waste tire disposal program.
Anthony Rew, Transfer Station Supervisor
Anthony Rew is the supervisor at the Pala Transfer Station. He oversees a crew that is responsible for curbside recycling pickup; preparing and shipping recyclables like cardboard, glass, plastic, and metal; maintaining our mulching operation; and helping Pala residents and other customers with trash drop-offs.
Alexis Wallick, Assistant THPO
Alexis attends to the daily operation of the Tribal Historic Preservation Office by responding to requests for cultural consultation. She researches projects to see if they will affect any of Pala’s traditional lands, sacred sites, and cultural areas. She also manages our database of archaeological sites and historical documents and attends trainings and meetings to stay up to date on projects that are important to Pala. Darold Wallick, Air Technician
Darold’s main job duties include operating and maintaining both of Pala’s air monitoring stations, managing the air quality database and developing and updating air quality project plans and standard operating procedures. He is also responsible for developing Pala’s Air Quality Index (AQI) and conducting all Indoor Air Quality Assessments (IAQA). For more on Pala’s air program, go here.
